2269 Bluetooth LE Sniffer BLE 4.0 nRF51822

 2269 Bluetooth LE Sniffer BLE 4.0 nRF51822

The Adafruit Bluefruit LE Sniffer is a must have tool for developers of hardware or software that relies on Bluetooth LE. This handy gadget will listen in on data traffic between two devices and push the conversation to Wireshark for analysis down to the packet level. On Windows machines you can use Nordic's software to stream live data to Wireshark or save it to a pcap file for offline analysis. Adafruit have example software in Python which will work with any operating system to capture Bluetooth data to pcap files. The Bluetooth LE Sniffer only works with Bluetooth LE devices, it can't be used to sniff Bluetooth Classic traffic. As the board's firmware occupies the whole of the onboard memory, there's no room for a bootloader which means that it can't be re-programmed over the air. To re-programme the board you can use a J-Link and SWD adaptor. Supplied as a fully assembled board.

  • Analyse Bluetooth LE data links using Wireshark
  • Stream live data on Windows, capture pcap files on other operating systems
  • Examine data traffic down to the packet level
  • Adafruit part no. 2269

We also supply this board with serial link firmware (Bluetooth LE Friend, 75-0585) which does include a bootloader so that you can programme it over the air. The Friend board does not have sniffing capabilities.

2471 HUZZAH ESP8266 WiFi Breakout Board FTDI

2471 HUZZAH ESP8266 WiFi Breakout Board FTDI

The Adafruit HUZZAH ESP8266 WiFi Breakout Boards use the Internet of Things chip of choice, the ESP8266, running at 80MHz, with 4Mbytes of Flash memory, 9 x GPIO pins, and 1 x analogue input. Adafruit have produced these breadboard friendly breakouts with an on board antenna so you can get to know this very successful chip. They come pre-programmed with NodeMCU Lua firmware which lets you perform complex network tasks in a small number of steps. In its raw state the EPS8266 can be a difficult chip to work with, but Adafruit have performed their magic to take the pain away. They added 2 x push buttons (RESET and user), an LED for blinking, 500mA 3.3V DC regulator, and 2 x diode protected power inputs. You can program it via a standard FTDI cable using its on board Lua interpreter or download a bootloader to it and treat it like an Arduino with WiFi. Supplied as an assembled and tested ESP8266 breakout, plus strips of 0.1in. header pins for you to solder on as required.

Adafruit provide a free tutorial with masses of information to help get you started.

  • FTDI programmable ESP8266 with built in antenna
  • Pre-programmed with NodeMCU Lua interpreter
  • 4 x mounting holes
  • Dimensions: 25 x 38 x 5mm (1 x 1.5 x 0.2in.)
  • Adafruit part no.: 2471

We supply either the SMT breakout (73-5319) which is the ESP8266 chip plus an antenna on a breadboard friendly breakout, or the same module mounted on a HUZZAH breakout (73-5312) with additional components to make your life easier. If you are an experienced user then feel free to use the SMT breakout or use the HUZZAH breakout for prototyping, then the SMT version for deployment.

The FTDI cable is not included, but we do stock a suitable cable if you don't mind a little hacking.

2633 Bluefruit LE SPI Friend Bluetooth Low Energy BLE

2633 Bluefruit LE SPI Friend Bluetooth Low Energy BLE

The Adafruit Bluefruit Friend Bluetooth Low Energy Breakout Board lets you cut through the pile of Bluetooth Classic APIs, development tools and licences, and treat a Bluetooth LE connection just like a serial link. Send and receive keystrokes from your favourite terminal software, from software such as Python (via PySerial) or from your smartphone. Adafruit have built a software stack right into the Bluetooth LE board, so you can focus on sending and receiving the data you want for your application. Its optional command mode lets you create GATT services and characteristics, make it into a UriBeacon and set the device advertising. The UriBeacon is part of the Google "Physical Web" initiative where a Bluetooth LE device broadcasts a URI which smartphone and tablet apps can detect. For example, the URI could lead to an interactive page of sensor data. Another particularly useful feature is the over the air (OTA) programming from any BLE capable iOS or Android device.

The Bluefruit Friend is based around the very capable MDBT40 chipset (similar to the Nordic nRF51822) with Adafruit's own 100% custom firmware. The MDBT40 has an ARM Cortex M0 core running at 16MHz, 256kbytes Flash memory, 32kbytes SRAM. It talks to the host microcontroller over 4 or 5 wire SPI.

Supplied as a fully assembled and tested Bluetooth Low Energy board plus a strip of 0.1in. header pins for you to solder on as required. See Adafruit's "Quick Start" guide, part of their massive free tutorial with software examples. They also provide an Android app and an iOS app which can talk BLE to your project. Please note, the Adafruit Metro is not included but we do stock the Adafruit Mini if you need one. We can also supply a wide range of breadboards.

  • Easily create Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connections with compatible devices
  • Supports Google's "Physical Web" initiative with UriBeacons
  • Uses simple serial UART commands
  • Over the air programmable
  • Dimensions: 23 x 26 x 5mm (0.9 x 1 x 0.2in.)
  • Adafruit part no.: 2633

2691 FONA 3G Cellular / GPS Breakout Board

2691 FONA 3G Cellular / GPS Breakout Board

The Adafruit FONA 3G Cellular Breakout Board adds to their impressive 2G phone breakouts with 3G and GPS built in. You can expect better coverage, backwards compatibility with GSM and a fast GPS with a 1s hot start time to first fix (TTFF). On the phone side, it's quad-band and will connect to any GSM network with a 2G SIM, plus dual-band UMTS/HDSPA. It can send and receive SMS messages, and send and receive GPRS data. Plug the module into your PC USB and you can send AT commands at up to 4Mbits/sec, talk GPS NMEA, and a use it as a modem. The GPS module has 16 x acquisition channels, 1s hot start time to first fix and an accuracy of 2.4m; an active GPS antenna is highly recommended to achieve best results.
