Iron core in transformer

Excuse me, i dont understand one thing about transformers...is the primary coil's magnetic flux being cut by the secondary coil that induces current in the secondary coil...or is the iron core that produces magnetic flux which is cut by the secondary coil...or is the magnetic flux produced by the primary coil flows to the secondary coil through the iron core that induces current in the secondary coil???can u please help me...im not quite sure wat is the function of the iron core in a transformer...
