12 Volt Regulator

Hi there,

I'm a bit of a newbie at this so my question is can I use a 78S12 regulator in a 24 Volt truck to produce the 12 volts I need to run a basic car stereo, also would I use the circuit I saw described with two 1uf smoothing caps ???

failing this, can someone suggest a better way ??
