what is the minimum input voltage that has to be given to get 5V output

Dropout voltage

Manu the minimum input voltage (on the DATA SHEETS)for the 7805 regulator is 7.5V

Minimum input voltage

In addition to the 78/79 series regulators there are low dropout voltage regulators available from the LM or TS 2940 series. These regulators have a dropout voltage ranging from 0.6 volts to 1.3volts.
