led enquiry

hi i know that leds have different colours according to the material they are constructed of and the voltage drop.i have read that each colour has a specific voltage drop.i have a circuit with a white led and a potentiometer.the main voltage power is around 3.80v. When the potentiometer does not have any resistance then the voltage drop at the led is maesured to be 3.7v, a value that is logical, i think. When i increase the resistance of the potentiometer the voltage drop decreases and reaches the minimum value of 2.8v.is it logical this to happen?i expected that thje voltage should stay the same and only the power intensity would change.please inform if i am wrong!!thank you
