12vdc regulated from a car battery/system

Hi all

I want to get a regulated 12vdc from a car electrical system. The things I am worried about are the starting voltage differences (sub 11vdc?) and alternator spikes (+17vdc?).

I have looked at the articles but I'd like to know if what I seek is actually possible and how I would go about making it happen. I'd particularly like to know how to get 12vdc regulated (or capped at 12v at least!) from what is basically a variable 11-17v supply!

Thanks in advance!

Talking to myself

Looking over my post again it seems that I may well need a 12vdc UPS!

12V dc from car battery.

For currents upto 1A the LM2940-C12 low dropout regulator will suffice. Availible from Rapid Electronics www.rapidonline.com or Farnell www.farnell.com.
